CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - A female pedestrian was killed after she was struck by a drunk driver in north Charlotte Thursday night, police say.

The accident occurred just before 11 p.m. in the 3500 block of North Tryon Street near Guy E. Suddreth Avenue.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said the pedestrian, who has been identified as 55-year-old Rosemarie Lyle, was attempting to cross North Tryon Street.

Lyle stepped off the curb and into the right outbound lane when she was struck by a 2000 Honda Accord driven by 29-year-old Melissa Wooten.

Following the crash, Wooten stopped at a nearby parking lot and then returned to the scene.

The CMPD said a field sobriety test indicated that Wooten was impaired. She was immediately placed under arrest.

Meanwhile, Lyle was transported to the hospital where she died shortly after midnight.

Wooten has been charged with Involuntary Manslaughter, Driving While Impaired, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

She is being held on a $52,000 secured bond at the Mecklenburg County jail.
