VILLA HEIGHTS (WBTV) - A local chapter of a canine charity set a milestone Sunday when it unchained its 100th dog.

The Coalition to Unchain Dogs built a fence around the yard of Blackey, a three-year-old Rottweiler/Shepard mix, freeing him from his chain.

Charity directors and volunteers say it's a freedom every animal deserves.

The non-profit has been building fences and providing spay & neuter services to communities around the Carolinas and Georgia since its conception four years ago.

Volunteers from the charity work directly with dog owners, providing assistance to improve the dog's home.

The group also helped get Blackey neutered, so he won't have to worry about fathering any puppies.

The Coalition started in Durham and has chapters in Raleigh, Atlanta and Charlotte.  Volunteers have "unchained" more than 1,000 dogs.  They offer their services for free.
