MORGANTON,NC (WBTV) – Groundbreaking is set for next Wednesday in Morganton for a new shopping center on the site of an old furniture factory complex.

The Morganton Heights Shopping Center will have as its anchor and centerpiece a new Wal Mart store. Morganton has had a Wal Mart since the 1980's on Burkemont Avenue just off of Interstate 40.

The new store will replace the old one. Officials say the new Wal Mart will be larger and require many more employees.

That, along with other stores that are expected in the complex, could mean as many as 1000 new jobs for the area, according to officials.

"Getting new jobs anywhere here is a high priority," said City Planning Director Lee Anderson.

The site for the development has been empty for about a decade. Several huge and empty manufacturing buildings sit amidst parking lots where the fences are rusting and the grass and weeds keep growing.

The buildings on the site will be torn down for the new development. Demolition is expected to begin within the next 45 days said a spokesperson for WRS Real Estate, which is the developer of the project. And estimated 60 million dollars will be invested in the project.

Mayor Mel Cohen said it would be sad to see the old factory, where thousands made their livelihood over the years, torn down. "But I'll trade that for a thousand jobs."
