Dr. Peter Gorman"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.
The recent resignation of Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Superintendent Dr. Peter Gorman brought strong reaction from all sides.
His proponents were shocked and disappointed.
His critics were elated.
As we reflect on Dr. Gorman's achievements and challenges during his time here, several things do stand out.
He helped boost academic achievement in a tremendous way…something we can all support.
But his recommendation to close several schools in minority communities left bitterness in its wake.
Gorman's emphasis on grade-based testing frustrated parents and teachers.
And his controversial "pay for performance" plan angered many.
But, it also had supporters who are demanding real change in our schools.
As you leave office, Dr. Gorman, we say "Thank you."
Why?
Well, we know you're leaving a difficult, often thankless, job.
And we're sure you've given your best.
And while we doubt it was your intended goal, your actions and decisions have gotten more moms and dads involved in the educational process.
Some have even decided to run for the School Board.
We think that's a good thing.
Because in truth, the final word lies with the School Board.
The Superintendent works for them.
And the School Board ultimately answers to you and me…the voters.
And when election time comes, let your vote reflect your "report card" on our School Board members' performances.
Tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com.
