CLEVELAND COUNTY, NC (WBTV) - The highway patrol says a man who was drinking alcohol and speeding caused a deadly wreck in Cleveland County early Sunday morning.

The wreck occurred around 1:10 a.m. on N.C. 10 just north of the town of Casar.

The two occupants in the car had just left Brackett Cedar Park which is a small campground which hosts various events.

James Pruett Jr., 31, of Casar, died after he was ejected from the Ford Taurus. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

The driver, 31-year-old Jeremy Spann, of Connelly Springs, survived the crash and was wearing his seatbelt.

According to the North Carolina Highway Patrol, high speed and alcohol were factors in the crash. A state trooper estimates that Spann was traveling between 85 and 90 mph when the collision occurred.

Spann was charged with DWI, and careless and reckless driving. Other charges could be filed against him, the highway patrol said.
