CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton says that while his surgically repaired ankle is getting better, it's not completely healed. The Pro Bowl player participated in his first full practice last night at Fan Fest since undergoing surgery in March. Newton looked sharp throwing passes but struggled with his timing on handoffs.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Richard Petty says the Race Team Alliance was necessary because NASCAR hasn't done enough to help the owners slash costs. The RTA was announced earlier this month as an alliance of nine of NASCAR's top teams.

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) - Former Florida State and NFL linebacker Deon Humphrey has been arrested in an assault on his girlfriend. The 38-year-old was taken into custody early Thursday and charged with domestic battery by strangulation. In three seasons in the NFL, Humphrey played for the Carolina Panthers, San Diego Chargers and Jacksonville Jaguars.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - The Hornets have announced they've signed rookie forward Noah Vonleh and re-signed veteran point guard Jannero Pargo. Terms of the deals were not released yesterday. Vonleh played one season at Indiana before turning pro. He was named Big Ten Freshman of the Year.
