HICKORY, NC (WBTV) - Firefighters were called to a fire at a furniture plant in Hickory Thursday afternoon.

The fire occurred at the Century Furniture plant located at 401 11th Street NW around 4:06 p.m.

Firefighters were on the scene within 10 minutes, and reported fire and smoke originating from the dust bin collection system.

Meanwhile, workers inside the building were able to get out of the building safely.

Firefighters initially responded with two engines, one ladder truck, and one command vehicle. A second alarm was activated due to the location of the fire and the hot weather. A third alarm was called when an explosive vent door activated.

Two firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion.

Officials say the fire started when a spark from a machine inside the building ignited dust in the collection system.
