"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.
Did you hear about the passing of 1st Lt. Demetrius Frison of Lancaster, Pennsylvania*?
Probably not.
Lt. Frison was one of a handful of servicemen killed in action within the past couple of weeksMost of us around here would have no reason to know him.
But Lt. Frison led a life that mattered.
And in my book, he died a hero.
He was just one of nearly two million men and women who have perished for our country since the Revolutionary War.
Volunteers who put themselves in harm's way…
Not because they cherished dying.
But rather, because they had a deep, passionate love for their country and their fellow citizens.
Their deaths are a reminder that freedom is not free.
The price is steep, and the currency is the blood of brave young men and women.
It is incumbent on us to treasure the rights and privileges for which they fought.
Let us honor those who have fallen by keeping our democracy a shining example for the world.
So, when night falls on Memorial Day – after all of the sales have ended…when the coals on the grill have cooled…
when the American flags have been put away until July 4th….
I'll remember 1st Lt. Demetrius Frison and the ultimate sacrifice he made.
