Man jailed for allegedly attacking cop, stealing, wrecking police car

SUMMERVILLE, SC (WCSC) -

Summerville police arrested a 38-year-old man Friday after they say he attacked a police officer then stole his patrol car and crashed it.

Authorities arrested Arthur Lee Thompson who police say has an extensive criminal history. The incident started when officers say they were able to spot the suspect's vehicle and stop it on Cedar Street near 9th Avenue.

A police report states that Thompson left his vehicle and attacked an officer. After the struggle, police say Thompson entered the marked patrol vehicle and left the scene at a high rate of speed.

While leaving the scene, Thompson crashed the vehicle on North Maple Street near Elks Lodge Lane, three miles from the original traffic stop.

According to South Carolina Highway Patrol, the car crash happened when a 2004 Mitsubishi landscaping truck attempted to make a left turn into a private drive. Thompson, driving the stolen police cruiser, attempted to pass the landscaping truck on a double yellow line. The cruiser struck the landscaping truck as it was turning and then struck a fence.

The victim in the landscaping truck was taken to a hospital. Thompson was transported to MUSC for treatment. The collision is under investigation by highway patrol.

Thompson was charged with reckless driving in the collision. Summerville Police are charging him with strong armed robbery, assault on police officer while resisting arrest, motor vehicle theft, possession of firearm by convicted felon and failure to stop for blue lights.

Authorities are continuing the investigation.
