Major drug bust at Richmond City Jail

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A tip leads to a major drug bust at the Richmond City Jail. Now, several people are facing a total of forty two charges in connection to the alleged crimes.

The group is accused of delivering cocaine and heroin to an inmate at the city jail. That inmate allegedly sold the drugs to other inmates. Sheriff C.T. Woody says those delivering the drugs hid them on their persons and sent the drugs to the jail by mail.

Cardell Springs, Celestine Gates and Ramaeco Hopkins are facing a number of charges including, delivering drugs to a jail. Investigator say the trio worked together to get cocaine and heroin to Otis Jones -- an inmate at Richmond City Jail.

"The four were working as a group. Coordinating it, setting it up -- the times it was coming in and how they were going to bring it in and who they were going to give it to," said Woody.

An informant tipped investigators off back in November. The sheriff's office launched an investigation.

"The information started from the community. The drugs were being delivered from the community here to Richmond City Jail and distributed by other means," said Woody.

Sheriff Woody says Springs, Gates, and Hopkins hid the drugs in their bodies and used the mail to get the drugs inside the jail.

"A lot of thought process was put into it. Sometimes a lot of fake things were sent to try and throw us off. All systems are not perfect and they can still get it in. There are numerous places where they can hide sometimes," said Woody.

Sheriff Woody wouldn't say how much drugs the group manage to get inside the jail. He did say it was a medium to large amount.

"We'll continue to push forward to make this place safe and secure," said Woody.

Springs, Gates, and Hopkins are now behind bars with Jones. Sheriff Woody says the investigation continues and that there's a possibility more people will be charged.
