WBTV Speak Out: Triumph Over Terrorism

Posted: Updated:

"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.

Last week when President Obama announced that Osama Bin Laden had been killed by U.S. forces, many of us celebrated.

The mastermind of the 9-11 attacks on our country finally faced the wrath of American justice.

But for many of us…the victory was bittersweet.

Thousands died…and our collective pain over such unimaginable horror will never truly be overcome.

Charlotteans remember how on that bloody day, we wondered if we were next.

As the 2nd largest financial city in the country, our tall banking towers suddenly looked like very plausible targets.

We called our loved ones…told them to get out of those buildings…to get to safety.

The threat and fear were very real.

Nearly a decade has gone by since the 9-11 attacks,  and we have learned to live with the possibility of terrorism in our daily lives.

Last week's news may have opened old wounds, but it also re-kindled our patriotic spirit.

These images from tornado-ravaged Alabama say it all.

In the midst of overwhelming destruction, people flew American flags to celebrate our triumph over terrorism.  Showing that once again that our resilience is what makes us great.

We will never forget those we lost on 9-11 or those who have since died in the name of freedom.

And we will never give up fighting for our way of life.  God Bless America.
