CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - People will sell nearly anything on Craigslist.com, and police say one woman put that to the test by attempting to sell her dead mother's prescription medication.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department received a tip on Friday, April 15, about someone advertising on www.craigslist.com their remaining prescription of Valium. In North Carolina, Valium is considered a scheduled IV controlled substance.
The cop sent an email including his phone number to the person who posted the ad on the website.
A short time later, someone who identified herself as "Kim", called the cop. Police say her real name is Latoya Daunielle Tezino, 26.
Tezino said she had 45 Valium pills she wanted to sell for $135. The cop and Tezino had a series of phone calls and agreed to meet in the parking lot of the Wendy's restaurant at 715 Charlottetowne Avenue around 11:30 a.m.
The undercover cop was the first one to arrive. When Tezino pulled up, she parked beside the cop's unmarked car.
The cop got out of his car, and walked over to Tezino's car. He said an infant was in the rear passenger seat of her car.
Tezino showed the cop the pill bottle with what he said appeared to be Valium pills inside.
The cop then gave a signal, and two other officers surrounded the car to assist with the arrest.
The police report said Tezino confessed that she was trying to sell the pills to buy her brother's son a birthday gift.
She said she got the pills from her dead mother's collection of medication.
She was not arrested at the scene and agreed to meet with detectives on Tuesday, April 19, to discuss the case further at which time she gave a full confession.
Tezino was charged with a narcotics violation on Monday, April 25. She was booked at the Mecklenburg County Jail and given a $1,000 secured bond.
