Browns Ferry nuclear plant taken off monitoring mode

Posted: Updated:

ATHENS, Ala. (AP) - The Nuclear Regulatory Commission says it's discontinued the monitoring mode status at the Browns Ferry nuclear plant in Alabama.

The plant is operated by the Tennessee Valley Authority. All three nuclear units at Browns Ferry automatically tripped on April 27 when severe storms damaged transmission lines, causing the plant to lose offsite power.

Browns Ferry exited its unusual event status Monday night with the restoration of 2 independent sources of offsite power.

During the unusual event, the lowest of 4 NRC emergency classifications, the reactors received power for cooling from the plant's emergency diesel generators.

The site is about 32 miles west of Huntsville.

NRC inspectors continue to review the events at Browns Ferry. The agency says it's evaluating whether any follow-up procedures will be needed.
