WBTV Speak Out: Repeat Offenders / New DA

"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.

It seems like time and time again we hear of violent and deadly crimes committed by people who've made a career out of going to jail.

And then getting right back out.

It's called "the revolving door of justice." And it's something our new District Attorney wants to slow down.

Andrew Murray started his new job on January 1st. Since then, he says his office has locked up 137 habitual offenders.

Most of them are going away for a long time.

Our former District Attorney didn't have such stellar numbers.

Peter Gilchrist was often criticized by police and the public for the perception that he let career criminals get off easy, or offered pleas that did not amount to much jail time.

Ultimately, putting some of the most dangerous offenders back out in the community to commit more crimes.

We're tired of that.

And we're encouraged that somebody's at least trying to do something to stop the trend.

Murray has made a commitment to his constituents to do his job. To keep those who repeatedly commit felonies where they belong: behind bars.

Sweeping the streets of 137 thugs in 4 months is a big deal, and we applaud our new D. A. for coming equipped with some teeth.
