Mint Hill, NC (WBTV) - The Firefighter Steven Coakley Foundation hosted its Eighth Annual Golf Tournament at Olde Sycamore Golf Plantation on Monday with its largest turnout and support ever.

Several members of the FDNY attended, who were also Steven Coakley's co-workers. They all responded to the World Trade Center attacks. Steven and three others from Engine 217 did not make it out.

A group of five travelled down to Charlotte for the tournament, where Coakley's sister lives. They were with Steven's family when they heard about Osama bin Laden's death.

"I didn't know whether to jump for joy or cry," said retired FDNY firefighter Dan Naughton. He worked with Coakley on  September 11th.

Coakley's sister said it was perfect timing to have her extended family from the FDNY at her home when the news broke.

"It was comforting," said Kara Walker, who created her brother's Foundation. "He would be happy someone who caused so much destruction and evil can't do it anymore," she said.

The Foundation also displayed a steel beam from the World Trade Center. Foundation organizer Edmund Walker says the beam will be taken to area schools to help teach about 9/11.

The Foundation was established to honor Steven and other heroes who lost their lives in the World Trade Center on 9/11.
