Elmore County High School in Eclectic is being used as a shelter. The Red Cross, Elmore County EMA and others have been providing food and other assistance to storm victims.
It's not just people at the shelter assisting victims. People from across Elmore County have been donating all types of good and service, along with the time.
"I got here at eight this morning and there were only two cars here at the school," said Barbara Poole Simmons, with the American Red Cross. "It wasn't long before business really picked up. And people came out to volunteer; people came to register to get help."
The Red Cross has been out in the area providing food for those affected by the storms and reminding them that the shelter is open. They've gotten a big assist from the community. Stephanie Pressley came out twice to donate. Her neighborhood was hard hit by the storms.
"The scary thing is it hit on Central Road and Central Plank Road," Pressley said. "Fifty yards on either side of my home was hit, destroyed. We're fortunate our house didn't get damage. All of our friends and families did."
A number of Elmore County High School students came to volunteer after they received a day off from school. Jake Walker was among those who came out to volunteer.
"I woke up in my house this morning thinking I have air conditioning, I have power, what can I do to help out," Walker said. "So I was up at six o'clock this morning, ready to help."
He was sent out into the affected areas to help storm victims.
"It's hard to describe, put in words. I've seen a lot of damage, houses destroyed. A lot of my best friends don't have houses. I'm just thankful it didn't hit my house."
"It is a nightmare, it's awful. And I think in times like these, we need to pull together, you're your friends, family and community."
The Red Cross said the shelter at Elmore County High will be open until further notice. Donations are being accepted there, and volunteers are asked to report to the cafeteria.
