Meaningful Mother's Day gifts don't have to be expensive

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - How do you find one gift that expresses the love you have for your mother?

It seems next to impossible, but I asked friends on my Facebook page -- What is/was your favorite Mother's Day gift?

Overwhelmingly, the women who posted their responses said their children were the greatest gift, but a close second was homemade gifts.

Most mothers seem to agree, the tiny treasures their children's hands have made and so proudly deliver on Mother's Day are the most meaningful gifts of all.

If you want to give your mother something special, you are never too old to make your mamma something she will cherish.

Recently, I visited the Dish It Out location in the Myers Park are of Charlotte. Dish It Out is a paint-your-own-pottery studio where you can find all kinds of things your mom will love and much of which she can actually use.

The $6 studio fee covers the paint and firing of the pottery after it's been painted. You can pick from a huge variety of unpainted pieces including platters to heart-shaped jewelry which cost between $10-$50.

Keep in mind, if you are going to take your kids there to do this project, be sure to plan ahead in time to get your masterpiece back before Mother's Day. The store needs seven days to fire and return the pottery.

Flowers are also a great idea for Mother's Day. A love bouquet is always a nice gesture for mom or you could take your mom to the flowers.

The Winghaven Foundation's annual "Gardeners Garden Tour" is held on Mother's Day weekend. For $25 per ticket, you can tour six of Charlotte's most beautiful private gardens and take a nice walk through Winghaven Gardens and Bird Sanctuary.

If you plan ahead, you can order boxed lunches for $9. There are so many beautiful spots to stop and sit, and just share with your mom all the gratitude you have for her.

Another idea for something you could do involves making a herb garden. I priced plants at the Kmart store on Freedom Drive in West Charlotte.

Small herb plants cost less than $3. If you select a nice, pretty pot and plant three herbs, you mother will be able to have fresh herbs, and watch the plants grow, just as she enjoy seeing her children grow.

If you really want to get creative, you can find all kinds of websites with craft ideas for the occasion. Click here for suggestions for Mother's Day cards.

No matter what you give your mom, remember that taking the time to thank her for her love, is the thing most moms really care about.

I have to agree with my Facebook friends--my child is the Mother's Day gift I will treasure the most.

Happy Mothers Day to all of you!
