Solar panels catch fire on factory rooftop, puzzles investigators

Posted: Updated:
MOUNT HOLLY, NC (WBTV) - A rooftop fire at a drywall factory has investigators stumped as to how it started.

The solar panels on the roof of the National Gypsum Company factory caught fire Saturday and burned a hole in the roof, officials say.

Mount Holly Fire and Rescue responded to a call at 12:55 p.m. and received help from Charlotte and Belmont fire departments.

Two engines hoisted 75- and 115-foot ladders into the air for firefighters to reach the blaze on the roof.

"I've never seen a fire like this in my 20 years fighting fire," said one fire Captain at the scene.

While motioning to another firefighter several yards away, the fire captain said, "He doesn't have a clue either, and he's been on the force for 20 years, at least."

Investigators are puzzled as to what sparked this fire, but the day's strong winds made it challenging to fight the fire.

No one was hurt in the fire.
