"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.
A few stories in the news lately…
A Citadel student links an innocent school girl's personal info to someone else's picture on a porn site.
Why?
Well, because he could.
Lawmakers restrict a synthetic form of marijuana called "K-2."
In no time at all, someone came up with an unregulated "K-3."
Police ban gang members from wearing an identifying color.
Well, no problem.
They simply change colors.
It seems like "the bad guys" are always one step ahead of the law.
Police departments are undermanned.
Courtrooms are clogged.
And cyberspace has all of us at risk - from our financial records to our own personal images.
In many ways, our society is spinning out of control.
Try as we might, we can't pass legislation - nor catch the criminals quickly enough - to stay ahead of the game.
We wish there were an easy solution.
Perhaps the best we can do is monitor our homes and families…
be ever-vigilant of our personal information…
and support those we hire and elect to protect us from criminal and illicit activity.
It's not "the worst of times," but it certainly is challenging.
If you have suggestions, we'd love to hear them. Please write us at wbtv.com and click on Speak Out.
