"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.
We're sure you've heard the phrase, "Talking out of both sides of your mouth" -- often when it comes to politics.
Well, here's another example that gets under our skin.
Recently, a Rockingham contractor was fined 15-hundred dollars for killing several trees outside Charlotte's historical Federal Courthouse.
In contrast, the city is deliberately removing a number of trees along Park Road…on private property.
They want to make way for a sidewalk.
Anyone passing out fines to the city?
No.
Leaves us wondering: "Why are the courthouse trees more important than those on Park Road?"
Seems once again, money talks.
Because money is available for the Park Road sidewalk.
Regardless of the current economic situation or any disruption to private homeowners...it is apparently there to be used, or else lost.
The cost is 400-thousand dollars for two-tenths of a mile of sidewalk, by the way.
We commend Park Road neighborhood residents for letting the city know they don't want their trees cut down.
We also ask city developers to next time, listen to neighbors' complaints.
Tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com.
