CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - WBTV News has learned a Mecklenburg County commissioner is now demanding to know what is being done to stop alleged illegal sexual activity taking place at James Boyce Park in southeast Charlotte.

Neighbors say men are being led to the park by a web site called

Matt Comer is the editor of Q-Notes which is a gay and lesbian publication.

"The people who are meeting in parks are not healthy, well-adjusted, openly gay people," Comer said.  "These are people who are in the closet, going to parks, specifically, because they're in the closet."

One writer at admits to having sex at the park, but now comes a new series of emails between county officials.

Commissioner Bill James sent out an email asking Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Director Jim Garges to "...provide a report on what we are doing to combat this moral scourge."

"We have been working with the police department to stop this at the park," Garges replied.

Meanwhile, Comer feels some in Charlotte's gay community are being stigmatized by those who break the law in public places.

"I don't think it's the job of the entire gay community to apologize for the actions a few within our community," Comer said.

Police tell neighbors they are aware of the problem, and are stepping up patrols at James Boyce Park.
