"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.
You probably know the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association better as the C-I-Double-A.
Every year since 2006, this basketball tournament has attracted more than 100-thousand fans to the Queen City.
When a tournament of this caliber comes to Charlotte, it's great for Uptown businesses -- both large and small.
But it also serves as an economic explosion to the entire Charlotte community AND surrounding neighbors.
We want to be very clear here --
When the C-I-double-A chooses to continue its relationship with Charlotte...we all win.
When the tournament repeatedly returns to the Queen City and pumps money into the community...we all win.
When restaurants, hotels and entertainment venues get jam-packed...we all win.
It also provides scholarships to students at member institutions.
When more young people can attend college…yes, we all win.
Just listen to these hardcore figures --
In 2009 the C-I-double-A brought 40-million dollars to the Charlotte area alone.
The past five years total have brought -- roughly -- 115-million.
Even better news?
The C-I-double-A renewed its contract with Charlotte until 20-14.
So no matter what you hear about possible boycotts, we think Charlotte should be honored to have the C-I-double-A.
And as a side note, we think those trying to stop it from coming should be ashamed for not looking at the big financial picture.
Tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com.
