WEST JEFFERSON, NC (WBTV) - When David Rubino saw the white fluffy thing splashing around in the water, he thought it was just a duck.

Rubino was at his friend Butch Sider's home doing some remodeling work on the house.

He took a coffee break and walked up to the frozen pond nearby. There, in the middle, was a year old Lhasa Apso struggling to paddle after breaking through the ice.

David didn't even think twice about jumping in after Macy.

"When you see a little dog or an animal like that out there suffering, you'll jump out there," David said.

He waded out to chest high waters and with one swoop, he scooped up the dog and waded back to shore.

No one was injured and the cold was knocked off by a nice hot shower. Butch tried to give his buddy a cash reward for the rescue, but David wouldn't have it.

He did get a brand new pair of boots though, and they're waterproof.
