WBTV Speak Out: Democratic National Convention

Posted: Updated:

"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.

This is a case we really hope "no news means good news."

Charlotte is still one of four cities in the running for the Democratic National Convention.

And we'll find out at the end of the month who wins.

Whether you're a Democrat, Republican, Libertarian, member of the Green Party or angry at all government...doesn't really matter here.

Throw your politics aside and just look at the money.

Winning the Democratic National Convention would be a gold mine for Charlotte.

Officials estimate the city that's awarded the Democrats' nod could see an economic benefit of more that 250-million dollars.

We spoke with an insider in Denver -- site of the 2008 convention.

He says the boost to their city was unbelievable.

(Rich Grant, Visit Denver)
"It totally changed the way Denver is perceived by other people, by meeting planners, by meeting executives.

There wasn't a corner in downtown that wasn't packed… you knew these images were being beamed around the world."

(Nick)
Images of jam-packed street corners and a bustling downtown bring up another bonus --

the ego-boost.

Charlotte could use one.

Nothing this big has happened to our city since…say...since February, 2004.

That's when the Panthers went to the Super Bowl.

Their success that season helped put Charlotte on a national map.

We clearly can't depend on our football team for that repeat notoriety right now...

But we are in the running for this attention.

Here's hoping the D-N-C makes the right choice.
