CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - According to a recent poll by Forbes Magazine, Charlotte tops even New York City as one of the best destinations for shopping.

The rating was based on ease of shopping, number of locations and tax rates. While Houston, Dallas and Baltimore topped the list of finest places to shop, Charlotte ranked 11th.

According to economic experts, any ranking is a big deal. Tony Crumbley with Charlotte Chamber of Economic Development says retail is key in securing huge tax dollars for the area.

"More retail sales means we've got more dollars in the economy, clerks are making money, the stores are making a profit," said Crumbley.

The Forbes report says Charlotte has more than 6,200 retail stores. We've also got 4 large malls including Northlake, South Park, Carolina Place and the regionally known Concord Mills.

All those places make hot spots for tourist visits or just convenient locations for locals.

New York City didn't make the list, presumably because of their increased tax rate.
