RALEIGH, NC (AP) - North Carolina's latest winter storm left snow piled in some areas, and raised the possibility of problems for power lines and highways as frozen precipitation left an icy coat.
Gov. Beverly Perdue declared a state of emergency, military bases and local governments closed down and police responded to hundreds of calls for help as snow fell from the western mountains to the Atlantic shore.
Despite the storm, utilities reported only scattered outages across their coverage areas, although icy precipitation would remain a threat into Tuesday.
The National Weather Service said snow and ice west and south of the Research Triangle area posed the greatest problem for roads and power lines late Monday night and Tuesday. The threat was not as significant in the Raleigh area because little snow had fallen.
