Cops looking for shoplifter who hit kiosk at SouthPark Mall

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - December was a good month for retailers, but it wasn't so good for retailers who had their profits walk right out of the store.

Shoplifting was rampant at Charlotte's busy shopping centers.

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has surveillance pictures of a man who hid his crime in broad daylight.  He walked up to a mall kiosk and grabbed a computer laptop.

CMPD detective Marty Cuthbertson said, "He went inside the bathroom, put it inside a bag, and as he came out, he was empty handed."

You would think that someone like a cashier or another shopper would have seen him, but no one did.

He's a well-dressed man who police call a bold thief.

"It was Christmas shopping the wrong way," said Cuthbertson, "and a little early, but yes, the wrong way."

Detective Cuthbertson says this man has hit at least three stores inside SouthPark Mall and maybe others in the surrounding area.

If you know who he is, call Crimestoppers at 704-334-1600.  You don't have to leave your name and police have raised the reward money to $5,000.
