CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The Carolina Panthers are searching for a new head coach to replace John Fox who was shown the door last week after nine seasons with the team.
There are four early favorites for the job. All lesser known assistant coaches in the NFL. And there's a little stipulation in the search process called the Rooney Rule.
It requires teams to interview at least one minority candidate before hiring a new head coach. But a couple of teams have recently been criticized for making a mockery of that rule.
Some minority candidates say they don't know who to trust.
The rule says you have to interview. You don't have to hire, leading some to believe it's just a sham interview - a minority candidate being brought in with no intention of being hired.
How did the Rooney Rule come about? And how will the Panthers follow it this time?
