WBTV Speak Out: Habitat For Humanity's 1000th Home

"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.

Habitat for Humanity builds affordable homes for low income families.

And last November, Habitat began construction of its 1000th home in the Charlotte area.

Quite an achievement.

The new owner should be ready to move in this month.

And when she does, she'll carry on a tradition begun locally in 1984 of people helping themselves…people helping each other.

Individuals, businesses, churches, neighborhood groups have all pitched in to make a better life for citizens in our community.

"Sweat Equity" is a term Habitat for Humanity uses to ensure that potential new home owners have a vested interest in the homes they're receiving.

Whether working on their own houses or those of others, clients must put in at least 250 hours of service.

Along with helping the homes get built, it fosters a since of responsibility and pride in ownership.

Former President Jimmy Carter has worked on Charlotte Habitat homes, as well as the late comedian Bob Hope and Habitat's national founder, Miller Fuller.

But for the most part, it's just regular Joes – neighbors helping neighbors.

As Habitat for Humanity celebrates its 1000th new home, we say "Congratulations" and "Here-Here" for doing it right.
