WBTV Speak Out: Year In Review 2010

Posted: Updated:

"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.

This is our 72nd editorial topic for the year of 2010.

For the first 71 we've congratulated, chastised and helped raise awareness.

We were furious with the way Congress handled healthcare reform.

Where was our promised open door procedure?

We thought Mecklenburg County's proposed streetcar line was not necessary...

The Whitewater Center needed a REAL business plan...

Section 8 housing in Ballantyne was a mess...

And C-M-S Superintendent Gorman was wrong for discouraging advanced degrees.

We gave an atta-boy to the Nascar Hall of Fame when it opened in June.

We've since asked how leaders could be SO far off in their predictions.

We're not sure how County Manager Harry Jones justified his own raise...or how this UNC-Charlotte dance program got 750-thousand of our stimulus dollars.

We're still, actually, really trying to figure that one out.

We ask lots of questions.

Like: Why do repeat drunk drivers get second chances?

Why is the education lottery being raided for Medicaid?

And how is anyone supposed to understand a world that lets go of a beautiful 10-year-old cancer survivor named Zahra Baker?

We've tried to document the year's ups-and-downs, while acting as a mouthpiece for the 22 counties watching.

So here's to doing the same in 2011....And please, let us know what topics you think we should tackle in the new year.

Tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com
