WBTV Speak Out: First Night

Posted: Updated:

"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.

Where and how will you welcome in the New Year?

Many cities celebrate what's known as "First Night."

An odd name for a celebration on the last night of the year.

But there's history in the title.

The concept of First Night began in 1976 with a big party on Boston Common.

The first First Night provided an alternative to traditional, alcohol-soaked New Year's Eve parties.

After a 13 year hiatus, the tradition was re-birthed in Charlotte 3 years ago.

WBTV is happy to be a sponsor. We think this joyous celebration is a great way to bring the community together.

Call it a down home taste of Charlotte culture -- tons of events, and all family friendly.

You've got music...dancing...arts...even a People's Processional Parade the kids always love.

And, of course, the countdown.

With a finale of fireworks.

So if you're looking for a way to usher in the New Year, think about joining an imaginative and uplifting cultural event open to all those in the Charlotte area.

And, if you can't get there in person, we're going to carry it live from 10-midnight right here on WBTV.

No matter how you celebrate...have a happy and safe December 31st.

Tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com
