CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - When Mike Middleton read the story about oatmeal in the newspaper, he wanted to help.
The Men's Shelter of Charlotte put out a call for donations of their most cherished warm breakfast meal.
The Men's Shelter said they needed 2,000 pounds of the dried oats.
Mike's story starts long before his effort to collect more than 700 pounds of oatmeal.
"On Sunday night April 21st, 1991 I thought my heart was going to explode," Mike said of the very day he decided to get help for his alcohol addiction. His recovery process isn't over and never will be.
His trip to the Men's Shelter was part of the healing.
Mike wasn't alone.
While he was making his delivery, swarms of other deliveries came in. 100 pounds here, 240 pounds there. The Men's Shelter only needed 2,000 pounds of oatmeal. They're now closing in on 30,000 pounds delivered by donations.
