"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.
We all know money can make a difference between going to college or putting it on hold.
But for some C-M-S high school graduates, money will now be LESS of an issue.
Why?
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools was recently awarded a quarter of a million dollars for college scholarships.
That money that will help change the lives of many hard-working students.
Each year the Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation awards school districts who have narrowed the achievement gap.
C-M-S came out as a finalist this year.
As for that we say: "Congratulations!"
Even though C-M-S didn't bring home the gold – which was a 1-million dollar grand prize – the district still came out as a winner by scoring some scholarships.
These scholarships will go to certain seniors who have shown academic gains during high school.
Qualifying students will get up to 20-thousand dollars for attending a 4-year institution.
They could get up to 5-thousand for enrolling in a two year college.
It's a chance for deserving young people to further their education.
And unlike the lottery, this is money our politicians can't yank to help pay other bills.
Again congratulations C-M-S…and seniors, best of luck!
