Republicans can't repeal healthcare...yet

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Republicans have pulled off the biggest party turnover in 70 years, but it is not enough to repeal the healthcare overhaul many of them despise.

The country's next Speaker of the House has dried his eyes, and gotten down to business. John Boehner is already vowing to roll back the health care overhaul. In fact, he called yesterday's election results a mandate from the people to throw out a monstrosity.

"We have to do everything we can to try to repeal this bill and replace it with common sense reforms," Boehner said in a speech shortly after Tuesday's votes were tallied.

And there's a real sense on the street that Republicans will do what they've been campaigning on...kick healthcare to the curb.

But with Democrats still in control of the Senate, in won't be easy.

House Republicans can't simply throw out the Obama Administration's changes. The president, of course, still holds veto power, and even now, Republicans do not have sufficient numbers to override him.

Which is probably why Boehner is also putting repeal on the president's lap, saying he hopes Obama will respect the people, now that they've spoken through the election.

"It's not just what the American people are demanding, it's what they're expecting from us," Boehner said. "And the real question now is, are we going to listen to the American people?
