CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Richard Brooks spends most of his time caring for an ailing wife.
"It's been a rough two-and-a-half years," said Brooks.
Adding to the stress, a mounting pile of bills. Brooks signed on with a debt consolidation company to build a plan to whittle the bills down. Nearly three years in, he was on track to wipe his debt out. It's a when a letter arrived in the mail.
"I was stunned," said Brooks.
It said he owed nearly a thousand dollars on a gas company card.
"They're saying I never made a payment," said Brooks.
