CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The steam was pouring out of every pore in the 1902 steam powered water pump. The huge contraption fueled by coal and water was hissing and whistling as massive gears turned arms that pumped water from a hose.
This was the norm back in the early 1900's. Firefighters hitched up two horses to the massive 5 ton machine and scrambled to a fire.
The steam engine belonged to the Charlotte Fire Department way back when and once again is under the ownership of Charlotte firefighters.
The pumper has been expertly restored to its original working condition with the exception of new wheels.
The sounds and sights of such an antique machine drew smiles from firefighters both old and new. It's a good reminder of how far technology has come, and how much hard work went into fighting fires.
