WBTV Speak Out Response: Estate Taxes

Posted: Updated:

The following is a response to a recent Speak Out editorial from Mr. Jack Burke of Salisbury, NC.

The views expressed are solely those of Mr. Burke.

Good evening. My name is Jack Burke.

I'm a retired CPA and Chief Financial Officer of a small business.

I'm here to respond to Mr. Simonette's editorial about Estate Taxes.

First of all, if you are unfortunate enough to die this year, your estate will not be taxed at all.

However, if you die next year, and have an estate over one million dollars, then your estate will be subject to a tax.

If you are among the less than 2 percent of Americans in that fortunate situation then you should consult a CPA or knowledgeable estate attorney.

If you are like the rest of us, with less than a million dollar estate, you don't have to worry, there's no tax.

If you own a small business or farm you should consult your CPA or Estate Attorney to minimize the estate tax effects.

Don't be frightened by politicians or TV editorials. Get the facts.

Thank You.
