October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Each year, Charlotte-Mecklenburg 911 receives more than 35,000 domestic violence related calls.

Our county is very fortunate to have numerous resources to assist victims of this potentially deadly crime. In support of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Domestic Violence Unit of the Special Victims Division will be collecting items for the women and children who are staying at the Shelter for Battered Women during the month of October.

We are seeking items such as lotions, powders, toothbrushes and toothpastes, hair brushes, fingernail clippers, note pads, pens, individually wrapped hard candy, 2011 small calendars, puzzle books, and hand sanitizers.

The items will be placed in baskets and given to shelter residents. They may be dropped off at any of the thirteen Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Divisions before Monday, October 18, 2010.

If you have any questions, please email Domestic Violence Liaison Melissa Bowlin or Detective Teresa Huey .
