CONCORD, NC (WBTV) - As the NHRA Nationals sweep through the Z-Max Dragway in Concord, one name stands out with a special story.
Jack Beckman is used to flying through the air at speeds of more than 300 mph, but his mortality got a wake up call in 2004.
Backman was diagnosed with lymphoma and went under intense chemotherapy treatments to kill off the cancer cells that could have killed him.
It's been 6 years since Jack's last chemo round. He remembers the date exactly, but not because it's the experience that could have killed him, because it's the cancer that saved his life.
Jack says he's a different person now. The losses on the track don't come with any helmet throwing or screaming. Everything just seems to be much easier to cope with when you realize what a precious gift you've got.
