WBTV Speak Out: Speak Out for Schools

Posted: Updated:

"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.

One week of class is under the Charlotte Mecklenburg School District's belt..

38 more weeks to go. So far, so good.

But parents...students...everyone, really...don't get comfortable.

Here's why we think this school year will be critical: Board members changed the golden rules in educating your child.

They rearranged the priorities.

Improving neighborhood schools is now number one -- which is great.

But, where you have good, you also have bad.

Here are a few things happening right now we think you should keep an eye on to help hold C-M-S accountable:

One...By prioritizing other things, diversifying our schools just took a back seat.

Two...The district is discussing which schools could shut down next year in order to save a buck.

Three...For the first time this year, C-M-S athletes now have to pay to play.

Folks, if you've never been involved with education before, now is the time.

The game has changed when it comes to how we teach our kids.

If you have an opinion on the game changing, let school board reps know.

Go to a meeting one Tuesday night.

Send a few emails.

Ask the board member to please write you back so you know they received it.

Above all else, ask yourself, "Are we educating our kids the best way possible?"

If your answer is "No," then it's your responsibility to speak out.

Tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com
