DENVER, NC (WBTV) - It takes Bruce Long at least an hour to harness, strap, saddle, and ready-up his horses. It takes him about 6 hours for the two Thoroughbreds to lug him and his 1916 sickle mower through a huge hay field. All of it could be done much faster with a John Deere, but that wouldn't be as much fun.
Bruce picked up what he calls a hobby, years ago. He uses the extremely outdated method to cut hay fields in Lincoln County. But outdated doesn't mean it doesn't work. In fact, Bruce says the horse-drawn mower and antique attachment does a better job than his buddy's tractor.
Plus, there's the breeze that comes with being pulled by horses. The breeze that tractor doors don't shut out.
Bruce says it also helps that his hay mowers don't use much fuel, only a few munches of the same hay they're helping mow.
