WBTV Speak Out: A Waste of Stimulus Money

Posted: Updated:

"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.

Here's a rare opportunity to SEE your tax dollars at work while also taking in a little culture.

U-N-C-Charlotte's Dance Draw features 2 dancers.

As they move, symbols on a big screen behind them are also in motion.

The dancers' movement controls what is seen on the screen.

Are you confused?

Are you wondering how is THIS a fair use of $750,000 of taxpayer money?

Well, we are.

Republican lawmakers call this the SECOND biggest waste of stimulus money in the entire country.

We don't always agree with any ONE political party -- our editorial board is made up of various people with various opinions.

But folks, we unanimously agree that this stimulus money is SUPPOSED to create jobs....and this dance project just isn't doing that.

UNCC counters it does put money back in the economy.

Dr. Latulipe of UNCC says,  "It's paying customers, it's paying equipment manufacturers, the students who are being funded are going out and spending their money in Charlotte, so the money is getting into the economy."

But as for those jobs?

"Dance Draw" created a total of 5.

Five jobs.

3 dancers.  2 web people.

We think those approving stimulus spending could have found a more critical use of the money.  What's your opinion?
