During the reporting period of August 1, 2009 to July 31, 2010, WBTV provided notice of all full-time vacancies to the National Association of Black Journalist, National Association of Hispanic Journalist, Career Women.com and Diversitysearch.com, all of which include substantial participation by women and minorities.

Describe Nature of Initiative:

 

Internship Program

 

 

 

 

Describe Scope of Broadcasters' Participation (including names of any other sponsoring or participating organizations):

 

Provided experience to students to learn about different careers within the broadcast journalism industry.  Students were encouraged to seek advice from and learn from as many different WBTV employees as possible throughout the internship.  Students' activities may include, but are not limited to, helping producers and assignment editors gather information for newscasts, helping reporters gather information for stories and accompany reporters in the field, attending news planning meetings, and watching live broadcasts from the studio and the control room.  All students received college credit for their internship.

Describe Nature of Initiative:

 

Service on Advisory Board and participation in events relating to broadcast career development and opportunities

 

 

 

Describe Scope of Broadcasters' Participation (including names of any other sponsoring or participating organizations):

 

News Content Operations Manager is a long-time member and currently serving as Chairman of the Teleproduction Technology Department Advisory Board at York Technical College, located in Rock Hill, S.C.

 

The board is comprised of York Tech faculty, members of the media and professionals working in media related fields. The continuing goal is to evaluate the course to determine if the curriculum is keeping up with trends in broadcasting and advancements in technology. The input from the board helps refine the courses from year to year. The board also assists the college place students in internships at television stations and production facilities where many end up being hired. At present, WBTV employ's several York Tech graduates and they are working as photographers, editors, production assistants and web contributors.

Describe Nature of Initiative:

Internship Program

 

 

 

 

 

Describe Scope of Broadcasters' Participation (including names of any other sponsoring or participating organizations):

 

The Community Affairs and Marketing interns (two) assisted in the organization and implementation of promotional events for WBTV (Speed Street, Taste of Charlotte, 24 Hours of Booty).  These interns reported to the Programming and Research Director and worked closely with the Programming and Marketing Departments.  Interns learned our news promotion/marketing philosophy and interacted with other departments within WBTV, and experienced hands on participation in all of our promotional events.  Responsibilities included administrative duties, planning and facilitating promotional events, organizing and executing the website public file.  Both students will work a total of 120 hours over the summer and receive college credit for their internship.

Describe Nature of Initiative:

 

Host a Job Fair

 

 

Describe Scope of Broadcasters' Participation (including names of any other sponsoring or participating organizations):

 

WBTV hosted its' inaugural Road to Recovery Job Fair on Wednesday, April 28, 2010.  The event was held at Concord Mills Mall from 11am - 2pm.  In addition to WBTV's booth, there were 14 employers participating with over 500 job openings.  Approximately 1,000 job seekers were in attendance.  It was a huge success and great boost for Charlotte.  The News Department did several cut-ins for the noon newscast that day.  Additionally, we ran banner ads to promote the event approximately three weeks out on wbtv.com, the on-air promos began running two weeks prior to the event and newscast mentions one week before.  It was a joint effort with many of WBTV's employees there to help.

WBTV's Director of Operations, Chief Engineer and Executive Producer attended the NAB Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada.  At the conference, Executive Producer Jen Torsiello attended courses to expand her broadcast skills including classes on documentaries, light, shot composition, and audio.

Host ‘The Road to Recovery' program

In January 2010, WBTV aired a special program call The Road to Recovery, aimed at arming people with information they needed to find a job during these tough economic times.  As part of the show, viewers were encouraged to call in with employment questions.  Folks from the North Carolina Employment Security Commission were in our studio during the live program answering phones and fielding questions.
