CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - The NC Department of Transportation is in phase two of the US- 29/ NC- 49 Roadway Improvement project.
The first major lane closure will take place Monday, July 12th, 2010 at 9 am. DOT crews will close the ramp from southbound NC-49 to US-29 in order to remove the bridge at University City Boulevard.
There, they will build a new intersection to eventually connect with North Tryon Street.
Charlie Justice manages Carolina Springs Auto Spa which sits right on Highway 49 before it weaves into North Tryon Street. He's concerned the traffic jam out front will drive his customers away.
"We've probably done a quarter of our business today," said Justice.
The construction along the 29/49 split is 12 years in the making. The plan is to add traffic lights, new bike lanes, a median large enough for the light rail, and larger sidewalks. Transportation officials are optimistic.
"This is an opportunity to improve these intersections and to prepare for the future and the long range of plans for the area," said David Howard, Chair of the Transportation Committee.
The closure will be in place for about a year. In the meantime, drivers will need to use an alternate route.
