Cover Story: SC limits water withdrawals

ROCK HILL, SC (WBTV) - New protections are in place for the region's most precious resource.

South Carolina Gov. Sanford signed a new law setting limits on how much water can be taken out of rivers and lakes in the Palmetto State.

The new permit law will better protect state waterways from being sucked dry.

It surprises many people that the state had not already had restrictions in place for how much water can be withdrawn.

Basically before now it was first come first serve, whoever gets it first can take as much as he wants.

This new law came out - of the severe drought that gripped the southeast three years ago.

And is expected to help South Carolina in its water war with North Carolina.
