More delays for I-40 this summer

The North Carolina Department of Transportation says travelers should expect delays on I-40 throughout the summer.  Westbound traffic on Interstate 40 in Haywood County may be delayed during peak travel times on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Crews are working to ensure rocks are stabilized following the rockslide that shut down this stretch of I-40 earlier this year. As a result, one westbound lane has been closed between Exit 7 and the North Carolina/Tennessee state line. This work is expected to continue through Labor Day.

NCDOT will alert travelers about delays through message boards on the highway. Those traveling to Tennessee during peak times on Friday, Saturdays and Sundays may want to consider alternate routes.

ALTERNATE ROUTE:  If you're traveling west on I-40 West, take Exit 53B (I-240 West) in Asheville and follow I-240 West to Exit 4A (I-26 West). Follow I-26 West (a North Carolina Scenic Highway) to I-81 South in Tennessee. Take I-81 South and follow it back to I-40 at mile marker 421.
