Safety Town offers real-life lessons of the road

By Kristen Hampton - bio l email

HUNTERSVILLE, NC (WBTV) - The scene was somewhat chaotic at first. A few dozen five year-olds on tricycles trying to maneuver a mock city street can be that way.

The kids are learning though, the rules of the road.

Huntersville Police put together small buildings and roads that mimic the real thing. There's even a real stop light and stop signs.

The idea is to teach kids to look out for people who might not be looking out for them. Riding bikes or being near roads can be dangerous if you don't know the rules.

Kids also are taught other safety lessons in Safety Town. Officers say it helps teach them respect for the rules and respect for each other.

This is the third year the course has been offered. This year is booked solid.
