Speak Out: Do The Right Thing

Posted: Updated:

"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.

Here's a question for you:

Is our indifference growing as our skyline gets bigger?

We fear it is.

We fear too many people are turning a blind eye.

No case illustrates this more than the light rail attack this Spring.

Michael, a banker, was commuting to work.

He says three guys were getting rowdy, loud and disruptive on the Lynx.

Michael asked them to tone it down.

These scars show what happened next.

The guys jumped him.

Three-on-one.

Security was questioned -- CATS defended its system.

But upon reflection, our real question isn't about "how many guards"...it's how many people on board watched this happen, and didn't step in to help.

Surveillance tape shows the reality.

Other riders -- basically -- ignore the fight and walk off the train.

Come on!

Charlotte isn't like that!

Or...are we?

Are we becoming so big-city that we'll ignore neighbors in need of help?

The Lynx situation is eerily similar to this one out of New York.

A man gets stabbed after stopping to help a woman...no one stops to help the man.

No one.

Video shows people walking by.

Then there's this example in Connecticut...a person hit by a car lays there, with no one jumping in to help.

So here's our reminder:

Do the right thing.

Have belief in your surroundings.

We appreciate Charlotte's growth...but want to remain respectable.

Plus, the next time the person needing help could be you.
