Owners say race weekend can hurt business

CONCORD, NC (WBTV) - There's no doubt back-to-back race weekends are big business. It's estimated one race weekend can generate $150 million for the local economy.

But for some businesses right near Charlotte Motor Speedway, race events hurt their bottom line.

"Sunday, we normally have the church crowd," said Sandy Hancock at Parkway House Family Restaurant. "We did not get them this time," she said.

Several workers at restaurants and shops along Bruton Smith Boulevard said Race Week actually hurts their business. Traffic keeps locals and some fans away.

Hancock said she has a friend who goes to the store and stocks up, just so she does not have to venture out when a race is in town. Hancock compared it to preparing for a storm or hurricane.

"This is the storm, this is the hurricane!" she said, talking about the traffic.

Hancock said when the campers and RV's leave, business will pick back up.
