Speak Out: Speak Up - Early and Often

Posted: Updated:

"Speak Out" is an expression of opinion from the Editorial Board of WBTV, and is presented by General Manager, Nick Simonette.

A few weeks ago, parents and the community spoke out and criticized Charlotte-Mecklenburg School Superintendent Peter Gorman and school board members about brutal budget cuts.

We applaud them for letting their voices be heard,

But at the same time we wonder: "Was it a day late and a dollar short?"

The budget is pretty much set.

The day AFTER the public bashed the board about possibly laying off nearly 600 teachers, board member Trent Merchant made these controversial remarks:

"You can't sit on your butt 364 days of the year, show up at a board meeting - rant and rave – and expect to get anything done. You have to be a partner."

We agree with Merchant.

Why?

Because when CMS' budget drama started a few months ago, the community was sleeping at the wheel.

At budget meeting after budget meeting, there was hardly any public outcry.

People didn't even show up in huge numbers when the board voted to give the superintendent the authority to start laying off teachers.

THAT is when the criticism should have been seen and heard.

Folks, let your voice be heard early and often.

The school district needs you.

CMS says next year's budget will be harsh.

Already the board is considering closing about a dozen schools and possibly laying off more teachers.

Are you going to do anything about that?

Start speaking up NOW so you and your children won't be paying for it LATER.

Tell us what YOU think. SpeakOut@wbtv.com
